Blog #8

I’m choosing topic number 3, which is about Huck.
I think my thesis going to be “Huck’s friendship with Jim shifts his thought about humanity has nothing to do with race. His internal conflict allows him to make an important decision base on his true feeling and his heart. At the end, Huck sees Jim as human being and a real person, not a slave.”
I’m going to talk about Huck’s though and feeling before he really gets to know Jim and after he gets know Jim. I’m not sure which part in the essay I’m going to talk about yet?
What do u think?? Or should i focus on something else?

  1. Great topic to choose from...That is a great start I like how your are focusing on his friendship with Jim seeing as how there is alot to talk about when it comes to the two...If your going to focus on Hucks thoughts and feelings before he really gets to know Jim I would start off with that first, maybe bring it back to his home life with his dad and why he has accepted Jim the way he does. Then talk about his felings for Jim afterwards and why he has done the things he's done based on his conscience and heart.

  3. Some examples of your topic could be the part when Huck decides to lie to the slave hunters instead of giving up Jim. Or the time Huck apologizes to Jim for making him think he was dreaming and making fun of him. There are a lot more. I think you should also talk about what in society shaped Hucks thoughts about Jim in the past and what is Hucks reaction to the rules of the South and how these reactions are changed by Jim's friendship. You can talk about how Huck is always questioning rules and morals. good topic.

  4. Good start, Veeya! I think you should get some examples about how Huck feels when he lost Jim and when he met Jim again; how Huck kind of protected Jim from others (dressed Jim up as a Arabian, said that Jim is his family slave, etc.)

  5. Veeya, I'm thinking about the arguments that you would/could make for this thesis. Here's a go at it:
    1. Huck begins the story with the normal perspectives of a white boy in the rural US before the Civil War. (your thesis is about change, which makes it easy to create an interesting paper. This is good.)
    2. Huck's background makes him something of an outsider, giving him the opportunity to have a perspective that varies from other children/people his age. Contrast that with the boy he gets to know who lives with the feuding families. That boy never questions any of what's going on around him, because he is so completely immersed in a structured environment of family and society.
    3. Because of his opportunity to think for himself, he has an internal debate throughout the book... hmmm... not an argument really, but a statement of what happens. I suppose here that you could talk about/give details about the various thoughts he has about Jim.

You could go two ways on this: discuss his transformation over the entire course of the story, or, discuss one particular chapter, where there are good examples of the nature of Huck's internal debate. I don't have any suggestions for any specific chapter, but if I think of one, I'll let you know.

Counters could focus on the possibility that Huck really has no freedom to choose, that his ideas are not of his own making, that his thinking is simply a reflection of what is going on around him... maybe...

  6. That’s a great thesis, I like it! I think you can take some evens in the story to develop you essay thesis. Use the order of the evens happened to show your thesis about the friendship of Huck and Jim; I think it maybe an easy way to develop the thesis for your essay.

  7. I think that these ideas will make a really great essay, don't switch. I like that you plan to compare and contrast Hucks character from the beginning of the story and after he goes on the adventure with Jim.

  8. you have really good ideas and i think you will do a great essay, I also think that the friendship between Jim and Huck isn't base on the race, but on the time they spent together.
